At times, students who are learning in more than one language may need extra support. A bilingual assessment helps us understand a student’s learning, language, and well-being needs by looking at their skills in both their first language and English.
What is a Bilingual Assessment?
A bilingual assessment provides a comprehensive evaluation of a student's abilities across several areas:
Language skills — including listening, speaking, reading, and writing — in both their first language and in English.
Learning strengths and challenges across different subject areas.
Social and emotional well-being- ensuring the student feels supported and connected at school.
This assessment helps schools gain a full understanding of a student's overall capabilities and identify the most effective support strategies.
Assessments are carried out in both languages by a trained RTLB assessor, working alongside a bilingual support person.
Why Might a Bilingual Assessment Be Needed?
A bilingual assessment might be recommended when:
A student is not making expected progress in learning English
A student has a disrupted or unclear education history
There are signs of additional learning or emotional needs
A student is struggling to communicate clearly or participate in class
What Happens After the Assessment?
The information from the assessment helps the school, teachers, and RTLB (Resource Teachers: Learning and Behaviour) team to:
Develop personalised learning support
Recommend additional help if needed
Strengthen both language and learning outcomes
We will work together with you to make sure the right steps are in place to help your child thrive.
Who qualifies for a Bilingual Assessment?
Students not born in New Zealand (migrants and former refugees)
Students born in New Zealand but raised in a non-English-speaking country
